"Green Travellers have more Fun"
Launched in 2013 greentravel.ie promotes businesses across Ireland who work hard to achieve good or best practice environmental management. These businesses, often small, are doing fantastic work to attain and progress along various levels of environmental improvement and, where relevant, certification.
They have invested time, energy and money to operate responsibly and we feel they deserve recognition and support. Obviously you do too which is why you’re using greentravel.ie to find somewhere to eat, sleep and have fun!
GreenTravel.ie was set up to provide this link between responsible hospitality and tourism businesses in Ireland and like minded travelers.
We are committed to finding and promoting businesses that operate responsibly and at the same time we encourage those yet to adopt a more responsible approach to make changes and come over to the green side!
We have a number of Additional Programmes whch focus on specific issues, which the visitor may find interesting - click on the link for more information and to see who is engaged;
- Plastic Smart - reducing single use plastics - more info here...
- Clean the World - Recycling soaps and toiletries for disadvantaged communities
We really believe that Green Travellers do have more fun as our listed businesses take a much greater level of care and attention than mainstream hospitality businesses. Our members want to be here for the long haul and recognise that they must work to embed sustainability within their operation which generally means that visitors get to experience a real slice of Ireland - be it our fabulous landscapes, our culture, our stunning local food or that particular gem of hospitality that is at the heart of the Irish welcome.
Our approach to listing businesses is 2 fold. We recognise a number of responsible and sustainable programmes that are Irish Based or part of a wider international programme and who operate in Ireland (See list below) Some of these are environmental certification programmes (such as GreenHospitality.ie) whilst others incorporate sustainability principles within their membership requirements. GreenTravel.ie has reviewed each of these programmes and are confident that they are well managed and check that their memebrs are engaged.
For small and micro businesses and others who either do not fit within any current programmes or where a formal programme is not suitable we offer the GREENMark by GreenTravel.ie - Eco-Friendly Business approved label. Businesses must tell us what they are doing and must also tell you the visitor through their website and when you visit them. This allows many of these passionate and commited people present their service or product under the Green umbrella. (If you are interested in achieving the GREENMark for your business, destination or festival details can be found in the GreenHospitality.ie website - click on the relevant sector)
We are always aware that not everyone delivers what they promise and we ask you, our visitors, to tell us if any of our listed businesses don't deliver on the promises they have made.
We also work closely with our colleagues in Failte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and other agencies to ensure a joined up approach to responsible tourism in Ireland and are committed to placing Ireland at the centre of Responsible Tourism internationally.
If you would like to tell us about a business you feel could be listed with us or if you are a business that would like to get involved please contact us at info@greentravel.ie – we’d love to share your green story.
Our special thanks must go to the Environmental Protection Agency (www.epa.ie) whose funding allowed us to develop this site.
